2018 Ford Explorer vs Nissan Pathfinder

Family-friendly SUVs are a great way to get around Dover, Middletown, and Odessa. They offer lots of seating, convenient space, and a dependable, powerful ride.

But with so many out there today, how do you know which one is right for your family? Winner Ford hopes to help you decide with this 2018 Ford Explorer vs. Nissan Pathfinder comparison.

Passenger & Cargo Space

As a family friendly SUV, the 2018 Ford Explorer focuses on convenient seating and storage. With three rows of seats and room for seven people, it can take the whole gang and all your cargo.

Your passengers in the third row will have a comfortable 33.3 inches of rear legroom. Behind them, there's 21 cubic feet of space in the trunk.

It's easy to create more cargo room, too. The PowerFold® third-row seat gives you 43.39 cubic feet of space with just the push of a button.

To create even more space, the second row is equipped with 60/40 split fold-flat seats. With both rows folded, there's a total of 81.7 cubic feet of space.

You'll also have easy access to this space with the hands-free foot-activated liftgate. No more fumbling for your keys while holding your bags-just hold your foot out and load up.

The 2018 Nissan Pathfinder also seats seven but doesn't have the same accessibility or space. Backseat passengers will feel more cramped with only 30.7 inches of rear legroom.

Behind them, the trunk is smaller, allowing only 16 cubic feet of cargo room. There's less space with the second and third rows folded down too, with just 79.8 cubic feet of space.

Infotainment

To keep your family entertained, the 2018 Ford Explorer is equipped with Ford SYNC® 3. This voice-activated infotainment system can connect to your smartphone with Apple CarPlay™ and Android Auto™.

It can also stay connected to your phone when you're outside the car. With the FordPass™ smartphone app, you can locate your Explorer, turn the engine on, check your fuel levels, and lock and unlock it all from your phone.

The 2018 Nissan Pathfinder also has a dashboard-mounted infotainment system, but it doesn't offer as many options. Apple CarPlay™ and Android Auto™ are not available. There's also nothing like the FordPass™ app to keep you connected when you're not driving.

Power

There are three options for what powers the 2018 Ford Explorer while it's carrying all your passengers and keeping them entertained.

The first is a 3.5L V6 engine that gets 290 horsepower and 255 lb-ft of torque. This engine has Twin Independent Variable Camshaft Timing (Ti-VCT) to get smarter and more efficient production.

The second option adds more torque. It's a 2.3L EcoBoost® I-4 engine that gets 280 horsepower and generates up to 310 lb-ft of torque.

The final and most powerful engine is a 3.5L EcoBoost® V6 that reaches 365 horsepower and produces up to 350 lb-ft of torque.

All three of these engines work with a 6-speed SelectShift® automatic transmission, which gives you more freedom over your gear changes and your drive.

The 2018 Nissan Pathfinder only has one engine available. It's also a 3.5L V6, but it doesn't achieve the same level of power. The Continuously Variable Transmission also doesn't offer the same control over your drive as you'll get with SelectShift®.
