Fun to drive and offering two turbocharged engine options, the 2018 Ford Focus is one enjoyable compact. It's been around since 2008, so you know it's a favorite. But safety is the name of the game, especially for families and frequent drivers. Does this model pass the tests with flying colors? This 2018 Ford Focus safety review from Winner Ford has the answers.

Safety Ratings

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) awarded the 2018 Focus an overall rating of five stars out of five. This model scored five out of five on frontal crash and side crash testing, and four out of five stars in NHTSA rollover testing. The 2018 Focus has also received a safety score of 9.4 out of 10 by U.S. News & World Report.

The other major safety scorekeeper, the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS), rated the Focus the highest possible rating of Good in four standard crash tests. It scored the rating in the moderate overlap front test, side impact test, roof strength test and rear crash protection.

Standard Safety Features

Every model trim is equipped with brake assist to help improve response time, and electronic stability control for an exceptionally smooth ride. Four-wheel antilock brakes, five airbags and child safety locks are also standard for all of this model's trims. Traction control helps increase road contact even in difficult driving conditions.

Upgraded Safety Features

For the mid-trim SEL Hatch, you have everything the base model S Sedan does, plus upgrades. Four-wheel disc brakes are standard on this trim, as are daytime running lights to increase your visibility to others. Integrated turn signal mirrors make your signals easier to see in fog, rain and at night. Next up in the hatchbacks, the RS Hatch is the highest-end hatch trim for this vehicle. In addition to all the other equipment, safety features now include auto-leveling headlights.

But it's the Titanium Sedan trim that offers the ultimate in safety customization. Drivers can add an optional blind spot mirror, a potential lifesaver when faced with that vehicle you can't physically see. Lane departure warning is another add-on, letting you know to swiftly correct your course. Choose to include the cross-traffic alert in this trim and you'll stay aware of your extended surroundings and increase the chances of avoiding an impact.
