The Ford F-150 has
been the mainstay of the Ford Motor Company for years. It's a solid,
dependable truck and has proven to be extremely popular with drivers. No
matter the job, the F-150 can handle it, and it's a great vehicle to
show off a little personality.
Drivers
near Middletown, Odessa, and Dover know what a superior truck the F-150
is. It's been a consistent top seller in the area. Part of the reason
is the excellent fuel economy this truck brings to the table. Find out
more about the Ford F-150 MPG ratings.
EPA Estimates vs Real World Driving
When examining fuel economy numbers, it's very important to realize the difference between the EPA estimates and what actually occurs out in the real world.
When automakers test their cars for fuel efficiency, they do so on a closed course under very precise conditions. They want to make sure that all cars are tested the same way, so consumers can compare fuel efficiency numbers side by side, no matter the make or model of the car.
But, we all know that real world conditions aren't the same. When they test a car for highway mileage, they throw on the cruise control and see what kind of fuel efficiency they get. When we drive on the highway, we rarely get to throw on the cruise control and forget about it.
Our highway driving involves braking, traffic slowdowns, changing speed limits, and a host of other variables that make coming up with an average highway fuel efficiency difficult. Remember that real world driving is not the same as EPA driving.
Ford F-150 Fuel Efficiency Numbers
Having said that, look at how great the EPA-estimated fuel efficiency numbers are for the Ford F-150. On its most basic engine, a V6 with all-wheel drive, the F-150 gets an estimated 17 MPG in the city and 22 MPG on the highway.
Ford also has a 3.5L V6 twin turbo engine that gets an estimated 16 MPG in the city and 21 MPG on the highway. The combined estimated result of 20 MPG is better than nearly every truck in this class.
Upgrading to a 395 horsepower 5.0L V8 engine (using a 10-speed automatic transmission) gives us an EPA-estimated 16 MPG city and 22 MPG highway. Those are numbers that the Ram 1500 and Toyota Tundra can't begin to match!
Perhaps the best fuel economy from Ford on the F-150 comes from the final V6 engine. Take a truck with a twin turbo 2.7L V6 engine with all-wheel drive. This engine produces 375 horsepower and actually performs better than most trucks with a larger V8 engine. According to EPA estimates, this version of the F-150 gets a 19 MPG efficiency rating in the city, and a 24 MPG rating on the highway. This is an amazing engine, made even more so by the 470 lb-ft of torque this truck delivers!
