It happens to everyone at some point: you're driving along the roads of Dover, Middletown, or Odessa, minding your own business, when suddenly a light goes on in your console. You have no idea what it means, and you're not sure if you should stop and pull over or if you're safe to head home.

These indicators are your car's only way to communicate with you. Unfortunately, while cars today are more intelligent than ever before, they still can't talk-at least, they don't have a vocabulary. Their language is the lights they use to tell you that a system is on and functioning, that there's a malfunction or that there's imminent danger. Check out this Ford Mustang dashboard light guide, learn some of the lights you'll commonly encounter, and discover what to do when you see one light up.

Ford Mustang Dashboard Light Guide

The most important thing you should understand when consulting your Ford Mustang dashboard light guide is how to interpret the colors of the lights. This is the easiest way to know right off the bat what to do if you see a mysterious light and you're not sure what it means.

There are three different categories of lights you should watch for:

  • Red or Orange lights indicate a severe alert. If you see a light in these colors your car might be dangerous to drive. Pull over right away and further investigate what's going on.
  • Yellow lights indicate a malfunction, but not necessarily one that presents an imminent or severe danger. Your car should still be safe to drive, but it's important to have it diagnosed and repaired as soon as possible so it doesn't become serious.
  • Blue or Green lights are all systems go. They mean that some system or another is simply engaged and working as intended.

Specific Common Dashboard Lights

There are a number of specific dashboard lights that are likely the most common ones you'll see, and to which you should pay the most attention. These are as follows:

  • Check Engine: The Check Engine light will have two different warning levels. If it comes on and stays on, the issue is less severe, but should be diagnosed asap before it gets problematic. If the light flashes, however, it's a major problem and the car is not safe to drive. It can represent a range of issues from a loose gas cap to a major engine malfunction.
  • Anti-Lock Brakes: If you see the letters ABS within a circle, and inside parentheses, this indicates that your normal brakes are still working okay, but the antilock function is malfunctioning. The car is safe to drive, but if you have to brake quickly, your brakes could lock up.
  • Brake System: If you see the word BRAKE and you're not driving, it probably just means your parking brake is engaged. If it's not, you could have low brake fluid levels or there's another malfunction in the system. If this light isn't about your parking brake, the car is dangerous to drive.
  • Tire Pressure Monitoring: If you see an exclamation point inside of what looks like a horseshoe (it's actually a tire with bulging sides), you've got low pressure in one of your tires.
